Ellan Vannin Pipes and Drums Safeguarding Policy

1. Purpose
This policy ensures the safety, well-being, and protection of all members of Ellan Vannin Pipes and Drums, particularly children, young people, and vulnerable adults, in line with Isle of Man safeguarding laws and best practices.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all band members, leaders, instructors, volunteers, and anyone involved with the band’s activities.
3. Key Principles
• The Children and Young Persons Act 2001 (Isle of Man) and the Safeguarding Act 2018 guide this policy.
• The welfare of children and vulnerable adults is paramount.
• Every person, regardless of age, disability, gender, race, religion, or background, has the right to protection from harm.
• Safeguarding is a shared responsibility.
4. Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO)
• The band will appoint a Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO) as the main contact for safeguarding concerns.
• The DSO will undertake safeguarding training through Isle of Man Government services.
• The DSO’s details will be shared with all members.
5. Code of Conduct
All band members, leaders, and volunteers must:
• Treat all individuals with respect and dignity.
• Avoid situations where they are alone with a child or vulnerable adult.
• Use appropriate language and behaviour at all times.
• Report concerns about potential harm or abuse.
• Not engage in inappropriate physical contact.
• Not share personal contact details or social media with minors without parental consent.
6. Procedures for Handling Concerns
1. Recognising Concerns – Be aware of signs of abuse, neglect, or inappropriate behaviour.
2. Reporting Concerns – Any safeguarding concerns must be reported to the DSO immediately. If a child or vulnerable adult is at risk of immediate harm, call Isle of Man Police (999) or Children and Families Services (01624 686179).
3. Confidentiality – Information will only be shared on a need-to-know basis.
4. Investigation & Action – The DSO will follow Isle of Man safeguarding procedures and contact relevant authorities as necessary.
7. Training & Awareness
• All members will receive safeguarding information.
• The DSO and key members will undergo Isle of Man Safeguarding Board training.
8. Parental Consent & Photography
• Written parental consent is required for minors participating in band activities.
• Photography or filming of minors requires parental consent.
9. Online & Social Media Safety
• Official band communication with minors must go through parents or guardians.
• No inappropriate messaging or online behaviour is allowed.
10. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually in line with Isle of Man Safeguarding Board guidelines.
