Alan Wylie was an experienced piper and had the idea of starting a pipe on the Island along with Sharon Corlett. The first meeting was down in Ramsey and then a church in Douglas - the year was 1984! The band was set up to try and play as much Manx music as possible and hence the name Cair Vie meaning a fair wind in Manx! In the early years there were several Bombard players and the target was to play at the Lorient Festival in Brittany!
The band is now known as the Ellan Vannin Pipes & Drums and they meet every Tuesday at Braddan School - for more information telephone John Shakespeare on 07624 481814 or email evpd@manx.net
